The sign 'I AMSTERDAM' , relatively quickly after its introduction, became a symbol for the city and was especially loved by tourists. The sign was taken away for various reasons. Many inhabitants, the 'Amsterdammers', were and still are very upset about this incomprehensible decision of the city council. For Gminors it became a main reason to compose the song WE ARE AMSTERDAM (the Dutch version has the title: 'ONS AMSTERDAM'), with the refrain: "I am, I am Amsterdam, We are Amsterdam".
The following pictures, taken on 'kings-day', the birthday of Dutch king Willem-Alexander van Oranje, are the kind of material symbolizing what we mean when singing our song 'HOLLAND'.
